In spite of the fact that equities continued framing higher after yesterday, I found myself more interested in the short side due to something I saw in the profiles. The short was if 7198-7201 was lost and flipped to resistance which offered a potential cascading short setup.

7198-7201 was lost and offered overnight, leading to a rapid liquidation break down to the 7144.5-7147 weekly level. The opening drive was capped by 7177-7182 which allowed for a retest of the overnight low and same weekly level.

This was the one spot that could potentially negate a full move to 7115.5-7121 as it happened to contain Friday’s low (the breakout day from the multi-day balance). From the plan for Monday over the weekend reiterated in the Discord today:

ES certainly put in a lower wick on the daily candle, but the prior multi-day breakout has yet to re-confirm. Hint- if you have read recent recaps, you know exactly what the trade is for tomorrow.

The market was rather quiet today, but the trade setups were super clean. It was a “one and done” kind of day as it often is in a persistent uptrend.

The planned A+ trade was a hold or look below and fail of 7177-7182 on ES. It played out overnight as a LBAF (low of night 7171.5) resolving to the weekly 7206-7211 level (7208.5 overnight high) pretty early in the overnight session. This then triggered a pullback which held the 7177-7182 level 3 times including today’s low at 7177. This also produced a LBAF of the IB low which only improved the setup, and it resolved back to the 7206-7211 weekly level (7211.25 high of day).

NQ was a similar trade but played out in the opposite manner as it held the key level overnight, and then saw a LBAF during cash hours. It maintained some relative weakness after its selloff from the overnight high. This gave the overnight trade a lot more range (and frankly would have been much easier to hold) as it rallied nearly 200 handles in a straight line.

When the market is trending (in this case higher) I include in each week’s plan what must happen to negate this trend. If that doesn’t happen, then (in the case of an uptrend like now) we simply remain long and long biased on trades. For last week, sellers had to find acceptance back in the preceding Thursday’s range. This meant below 7089, and 7078-7081 in particular. Low of week was 7079.25. That was a minimum requirement, and it still could have produced a multi-day balance off that preceding Thursday’s low. Instead, it was low of week and on Friday a multi-day balance broke to the upside.

Friday did break the multi-day balance to the upside, thus far by a small margin. Should this upside break sustain, then matters remain straightforward. Should it fail, it doesn’t necessarily mean the uptrend is over. We will cover what does need to happen to solidify that in this week’s plan. That said, based on NQ and in particular, there is reason to believe that this upside break may (at least initially) fail.

A wild day in the market but really quite technical. NQ hit the weekly 27150-27169 level which worked as a nice proxy for an approximate range double from its range break.

At the same time ES/SPX (SPX provides a cleaner visual here) hit the top of its box for which we have been using the 7175-7180 weekly level. This led to a dramatic sell off which was facilitated by news but otherwise extremely technical. All this did is produce a look below and fail (LBAF) of the SPX box for a nice long back up.

This aligned perfectly with the ES 7088-7091 level from the weekly plan:

ES did absolutely nothing today but NQ went on a tear, never really offering much of a pullback overnight after holding Thursday’s high at yesterday’s low. From the weekly plan and the importance of Thursday’s range (both ES and NQ):

The overnight session held 715-735, struggled briefly with 802-815 but ultimately reclaimed it. After holding 802-815 from above after the 894-911 rejection, sellers were indeed trapped and a multi-day breakout was triggered.

ES has not yet broken out and traded just a 32-handle range today on weakness in non-tech sectors. Will ES join in the breakout tomorrow?

In last night’s plan we were looking to do some edge trading for today. NQ had been brought to balance yesterday. ES had not but profiles suggested balance anyway.

For NQ from last night and today we were looking to short failed breaks of 858 and/or 26885. The weekly 26894-26911 level triggered a look above and fail of both and it resolved for 300+ handles to the downside. This then triggered the look below and fail of 609-630 (twice) resolving for 180 during the cash session and did it again after hours on the Trump tweet after taking out the extreme low of the range (569) and filling the RTH bull gap.

ES was just as clean on the short side but showed notable intraday relative weakness vs NQ. The LAAF triggered overnight into the open and once the IB low broke to the downside leaving potential single prints, the longs off 7117-7124 just didn’t have the strength to fill the potential (now confirmed) single prints. This must be noted and carried forward:

Balance trading is vastly different than trend trading and an ability to adapt is critical.

In last week’s plan, the strength of the uptrend was once again noted. It has remained incumbent upon sellers to negate it. From last week’s plan:

Into this past week, I did have an inkling that we were likely to take out the preceding Friday’s low.

We got a gap down on Sunday night, which traded into the major bull gap. I was looking for a multi-day balance to form above this bull gap and a look below and fail (LBAF) of this multi-day balance would have been a long setup. Instead, the entire trade played out between Sunday night and Monday, keeping the trend fully intact with a bullish engulfing day once again.

It was an incredible move, but defense of the bull gap on the Sunday night gap down led to the LBAF long and then the breakout with continuation long.

When the market was in an active downtrend with sellers in full control, the only thing to talk about was potential UPside. Otherwise, it is easy to stay short. The last few weeks the focus has been on what must happen to negate this uptrend. That way, if it does not materialize it is straightforward enough to stay long. That will again be the focus for this week. We will understand what must happen to even neutralize this trend let alone reverse it.

Both ES and NQ once again opened on a true gap up, held their respective spike bases from yesterday and made yet another trend day run. ES SPY SPX QQQ and NDX all made new all-time highs. NQ hasn’t quite yet but was quite close at today’s high.

NQ held the weekly 934-946 overnight and held the 990 spike base from yesterday during the cash session:

I posted on X and will reiterate here. I would strongly discourage attempting to fade a sustained break to new highs like this with markets in price discovery. The only potentially bearish setup from here would be NQ making a cash hours ATH along with ES and then failing spectacularly back in range. VIX expiration was today and monthly options expiration is Friday and this often tends to be a pivotal juncture, but if the break sustains, I personally won’t be looking for much in the way of shorts until given a damn good reason.

That said, there were some early signs today that we might see a change in character after OPEX, which I’ll discuss in tonight’s plan.

Today opened on a true gap, both ES and NQ traded precisely 1 tick below their open, and another trend day was on. ES is within spitting distance of all-time highs after quite possibly the most vicious V-shaped rally I ever recall. Expecting an all-time high retest after a 10% correction is of course fully reasonable, but doing so without a daily higher low of any kind is pretty spectacular. Structure at the tail end of this move has become pretty poor, but no meaningful pullback will take place until certain criteria are met.

After yet another Sunday night gap down, both ES and NQ dipped into their massive bull gaps and, no surprise, found responsive buyers. A gap down like that was absolutely the last thing sellers wanted to see. This allowed for a retest of Friday’s low and once reclaimed, Friday’s high. Today’s close included an extremely large spike to the upside which will be discussed in tonight’s plan. We have PPI tomorrow which will be insanely elevated but the market knows this. At times like these the market looks unstoppable, but both ES and NQ closed right at the most important spot from the weekly plan. Best to be prepared for either direction tomorrow and keep bias in check.

After the overnight hold of the daily 6792-6794 level, ES once again played ping pong between the weekly 6803.5-6808.5 and 6818-6822 levels. This resolved in a LBAF of the IB low which was naturally one of the cleanest I’ve ever seen since I’m off the desk on Thursday mornings and was therefore unable to trade it.

It was another constructive day for bulls, keeping them in control of short time frame trend. NQ did show some weakness relative to ES but as of now is constructive. Tomorrow, sellers have one bullish characteristic from today’s profile they’ll need to negate in order to attempt to halt this uptrend.

Hilariously, the planned trade for Monday (which had played out Sunday night) played out again today. If you read last night’s recap you see what I mean. Objectively not a whole lot changed today. The market is still trading a range, and we now look to see if we can get a clean break of this range in either direction. Failed breaks of this range can be faded the other direction.
